A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.

The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
