Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying such drugs should be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
